Company Background

Client is a contract manufacturer for the food and nutraceutical market segments. All of the products are powders that serve as ingredients for further processing by their customers.
The plant operates 24/7 and is 100% owned by its employees and operates as an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Corporation. Company is debt-free; they own all real estate, plant, and property.

Job Perspective

The Plant Engineer is the only engineer in the company and is responsible for all engineering efforts and related work. The candidate should view him or herself as an overall highly skilled and trained technical resource to the plant, covering building, equipment, production and process. The job responsibilities and areas of involvement are very broad and encompassing; this is not a specialized or capital project intensive role. Success in this job is dependent on sound judgment, work ethic, and the drive to “figure it out” by asking, listening, observing, researching, consulting with experts for input, studying, and working with fellow employees at all levels, more than it is dependent on raw engineering skills. The nature of the work will encompass:

  • day-to-day plant and manufacturing issues to longer term planning
  • individual to team based work
  • manufacturing floor to desk work
  • research/data gathering to analytics to problem solving to execution and control (DMAIC)

  • Support plant’s day-to-day engineering related needs, to include, for example: technical maintenance issues, equipment trouble-shooting, process trouble-shooting, technical quality issue root cause analysis, etc.
  • Building/facility oversight, to include, for example: maintenance and knowledge of all drawings, building infrastructure (electrical, mechanical, boiler, waste water, compressed air), building structure integrity, energy effectiveness, environmental impact, federal, state and local regulatory compliance.
  • Equipment oversight, to include, for example: integrity/condition, long-term preventive maintenance in conjunction with Maintenance Dept, performance validation with optimal set points and limits, improvement, replacement, enhancement, risk management.
  • Manufacturing process oversight, to include, for example: effectiveness, performance, risk and variation management, improvement, waste reduction, yield improvement.
  • Manage the capital budget and all capital improvement projects including planning, design, justification, outsourcing, bidding, budgeting, awarding contracts, scheduling, managing contractors, cost tracking, project auditing, and implementing training programs as required. (The capital budget will tend to hover around $500K per year. Our last major investment was in 2013 when we added two dryers at a cost of around $6MM.)
  • Develop spray drying expertise via hands-on equipment and process training provided, outside educational opportunities, specific research as needed around ingredient and process questions.
  • Contribute to organization development through various means, to include, for example: writing of SOPs, training sessions, sharing and interpretation of analysis, audits, driving and leading change management, etc.
  • Contribute to organization risk management through various means, to include, for example: review of documentation (eg SDS), ingredient/processing research, etc.
  • Contribute engineering skills and knowledge toward QIC growth opportunities, for example: onboarding new customers and new ingredients, expansion via green field or acquisition.


  • Engineering Degree from an accredited university; preferably Chemical or Mechanical
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel; math and analytical skills
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years in a manufacturing environment; food or pharma preferred; mix of large and small company exposure preferred
  • Experience with regulatory requirements ideal (OSHA, HACCP, SQF, FSMA)
  • Detail oriented, able to multi-task and prioritize tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrates customer service attitude, solid listening and communication skills, highly responsive work style
